Mike Bella "Big In Vegas"

A superb reworking of one of my favorite Buck hits. Bella displays consistently excellent taste in his material throughout his new CD, sampling the catalogs of Harlan Howard, Dwight Yoakum, Bert Russell and Al Anderson, among others.

Bella shows himself to be influenced by the vocal style of Buck Owens, though, unlike, say, The Derailers, he steers clear of the Bakersfield legend's trademark of guitar sound.
The title track here, Big In Vegas, was a hit for Owens over 30 yeas ago, and Mike makes a fair fist of it, while Clay Blaker's Every Little Thing is in the classic Buck two-step tradition.
Mike is a good enough singer to keep the originals at arm's length, and he's been careful in his selection. In fact, I prefer his version of the Harlan Howard shuffle, Someone Had To Teach You to the George Strait's cut. Bella's cut of Poor Me marks him out to be his own man, as does his take on Pass Me By, the Johnny Rodriguez classic.
There's other good stuff too, such as the superior shuffle, Give Me Back My Heart, and the slow sad Don't, co-written by Leona Williams and Barbie Isham, Bert Russell's oldie A Little Bit Of Soap, Harlan Howard's May The Wind Be At Your Back. In the main, this is the kind of traditional country set that I can play time and again.

Mike Bella's new CD is one of the best albums I've heard in a long time. It contains real traditional Country Music, legends like Harlan Howard, Buck Owens, Hillman Hall and Dwight Yoakam, among others contribute with their songs. Mike has all the right components to reach the masses.

The voice, the personality and the fresh good looks make Mike Bella a neat package of explosive potential no-one should take lightly. His pure traditional voice reminds me of David Ball and when Mike sings "Some One Had to Teach You", "Every Little Thing", "Poor Me", "Pass Me By" and "Give Me Back My Heart" it feels that Country Music is in good hands for the future. Thanks!!!

Mike Bella a talented singer with more then a hint of Buck Owens running through his vocal chords. On this well-produced, retro-country set he presents a versatile collection of sparkling country songs with fiddle and steel-flecked arrangements that smack of the '60's. Those country listeners who decry beat-heavy '90s country, will probably find the lighter rhythms of this solid album to their liking.
